How to use bacteriostatic water for peptide reconstitution
Bacteriostatic water is the standard diluent used in laboratory research to reconstitute lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides. Because it is preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a single 10 mL vial can be drawn from multiple times over 28 days, making it ideal for research protocols involving repeated small-volume withdrawals.
- 01Swab
Wipe both vial stoppers (peptide + bacteriostatic water) with a 70% isopropyl alcohol swab.
- 02Draw
Use a sterile syringe to draw the desired volume of bacteriostatic water — typically 1–5 mL.
- 03Inject
Slowly inject the water down the inside wall of the peptide vial — avoid aiming at the powder.
- 04Swirl
Swirl gently to dissolve. Never shake — agitation can denature peptide structure.
- 05Store
Refrigerate at 2–8 °C. Use within 28 days once the stopper has been punctured.
Quick reconstitution math
The final concentration (mg/mL) = peptide mass (mg) ÷ water volume (mL).
| Peptide mass | BacWater added | Final concentration |
|---|---|---|
| 5 mg | 1 mL | 5 mg/mL |
| 5 mg | 2 mL | 2.5 mg/mL |
| 10 mg | 2 mL | 5 mg/mL |
| 10 mg | 5 mL | 2 mg/mL |

Bacteriostatic Water FAQ
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative inhibits bacterial growth, which means a single vial can be used for multiple draws after its seal is first broken — typically up to 28 days when stored refrigerated between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
It is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides and research compounds in laboratory settings. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol keeps the solution sterile between multiple withdrawals, unlike single-use sterile water which must be discarded after one use. Sold strictly for research and laboratory use.

Yes. Each batch is tested for sterility, endotoxin level, and benzyl alcohol content. Email support@bacteriostatic-water.shop with your order number and we will send the matching COA within one business day.
Unopened vials are shelf-stable at room temperature (20 to 25 degrees Celsius) until the printed expiration date. Once the rubber stopper has been punctured, store refrigerated between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius and use within 28 days per USP guidance.
Once the seal has been broken, USP guidance is to discard the vial after 28 days, even if liquid remains. The benzyl alcohol preserves sterility during this window provided the vial is kept refrigerated and the stopper is wiped with an alcohol swab before each withdrawal.
Not quite. Bacteriostatic water is one specific type of reconstitution solution — sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Other reconstitution solutions (plain sterile water, acetic acid, saline) exist but bacteriostatic water is by far the most common diluent for peptide research because it permits multi-dose withdrawal.
